Ann Smith Newkirk

Ann Newkirk, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on June 22, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 5, 1940, in the quaint town of Bennettsville, South Carolina, Ann was a beacon of warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.

Ann was the beloved daughter of the late Peter Turner Smith and Elsie Bowman Smith. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Frank Newkirk, and her cherished parents. Married on a magical Christmas Eve in 1969, Ann and Frank shared nearly three decades of love and companionship until his passing in November of 1998.

Ann graduated from Bennettsville High School in 1958, where she cultivated her lifelong passion for learning and helping others. This passion led her to a fulfilling career with the School Board of Seminole County, Florida. For 29 years, Ann worked tirelessly as a teacher's aide and in the audiology department, touching countless lives with her gentle spirit and dedication to education.

Her love for animals was profound and unwavering. She committed much of her time to the Humane Society of Seminole County as a volunteer, conducting home inspections for animal adoptions and ensuring that countless animals found loving homes. Her compassionate heart extended to all creatures, great and small.

A devoted mother, Ann leaves behind her daughters, Debra Brunson (Roger Brunson) and Beth Abruzzino. Her legacy continues through her five grandchildren: Ambra Hodge (Dustin), Tyler Christman (Autumn), Seth Abruzzino, Noah Abruzzino, and Jonah Abruzzino (Alyssa). Her life was further enriched by the laughter and joy of her five great-grandchildren: Karsten Hodge, Maddux Christman, Brody Christman, Mason Abruzzino, and Enzo Abruzzino.

Ann's family extends their deepest gratitude to Sarah Perry for her compassionate care and unwavering support during Ann's later years. Her presence brought comfort and peace to Ann and her family.

A graveside service to celebrate Ann's life will be held on June 26, 2026, at 11:00 AM at McCall Cemetery, located at 204 N. Cook Street, Bennettsville, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Ann's memory to the SPCA Humane Organization of Sumter County, Sumter, SC, to continue her passionate work for animal welfare.

Ann Newkirk will be remembered for her steadfast love, generous spirit, and the gentle way she touched the lives of all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and friends, and she will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
