Bernice Heustess

Bennettsville, SC

Bernice Harris Heustess passed away on September 9, 2023, at the Hospice House of Laurens County after a brief stay at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Bennettsville, SC, she was one of seven daughters to the late Alfred Lee and Margaret Pearson Harris. She was married for 48 years to Coley Heustess of Clio, where they lived until his death in 1998. At that time, she returned to her hometown of Bennettsville and remained there until she moved to Bailey Manor in Clinton, SC in 2015.

Mrs. Heustess was a member of Clio Presbyterian Church and served as Choir member and Director, Bible study teacher, and Secretary/Treasurer of their Memorial fund. In past years she was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout troop leader.

She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, working on the computer, and needlepoint. She spent many hours crocheting caps for cancer patients and contributed them to hospitals, cancer centers, and individuals. She was a poet and wrote many beautiful poems.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased by six sisters: Virginia Campbell of Chesterfield, Mildred Weill, Marie Hucks, Bobbie Stepp, Lucy Tucker and Elsie Grace Harris, all of Bennettsville, and an infant granddaughter of Clinton, SC.

She is survived by a son, Coley “Mack” Heustess (Patrice) of Clinton, SC, a daughter, Terrie Lynn Wilson (Woody) of Youngsville, NC, grandchildren Michael Kyle Wilson (Kate) of Durham, NC, Heather Heustess Owens (Stewart) of Clinton, SC, Mark Heustess Wilson (Sabrina) of Raleigh, NC, and a great grandson Preston Coley Wilson of Durham, NC.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2023, in Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Burroughs Funeral Home in Bennettsville.

Memorials may be sent to a Hospice of one’s choice.
