David Milton Herndon, known to most as “Hern,” passed away Saturday afternoon, June 27, surrounded by his loving family at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. David was a husband, father, father-in-law, brother, uncle, best friend, Pops, and “Grumple.” To know him was to know he was more than just a pretty face. People often said the mold was broken when the one and only Hern was made, because the world would not have been able to handle two of him. Everyone who knew him had a favorite Hern saying, a favorite Hern story, or a memory that will bring a smile.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Ottie and Geneva Herndon, and his brothers, Charles Allan Herndon and Richard Lee Herndon.

On November 30, 1964, David married his honey, Patsy Crowley. He called her “Pat,” and together they shared a life full of family, friends, laughter, and many memories. They made their home in Bennettsville, where David became well known and loved by many.

David was the proud owner of B&H NAPA Store, which became much more than a parts store. Over the years, it became a town hangout where friends, neighbors, and customers stopped by not only for parts, but also for conversation, stories, advice, laughter, and one of David’s unforgettable sayings.

David loved NASCAR, fishing, coon hunting, deer hunting, tractors, chickens, and being outdoors. He was known for wearing his overalls and enjoying the simple things in life. He made people feel welcome, whether he was cooking Sunday lunch, giving “life” lessons to anyone who would listen, or making sure all the kids had special drinks and snacks waiting for them.

David was known for building relationships that lasted a lifetime. Many young men became so close to him that everyone called them his sons, giving him even more “adopted” grandchildren to spoil. David had a huge extended family of great friends.

David leaves behind his wife, Patsy Herndon; his sister, Carol Sue Herndon Crouse of Bennettsville; two daughters, Angela O’Neal (Scott), and Rebekah Leslie (Allen); six grandchildren, Gunnar Freeman (Tori), David Freeman, Jenna Leslie, Kate Leslie, Molly Kyler (Jonathan), and Jodi O’Neal (Zach); and four great-grandchildren, Kai Freeman, Noah Freeman, August Freeman, and Harper Oliver.

David will be remembered for his strong personality, generous heart, love for his family, and the laughter he shared with others. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Burroughs Funeral Home. A visitation will follow immediately after funeral service in funeral home chapel. Burial will follow the visitation at McCall Cemetery in Bennettsville.
