Dorothy Brigman McKenzie

Dorothy Brigman McKenzie, 92, of Bennettsville, SC, was welcomed into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Saturday, January 22, 2022. She passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was the daughter of the late Jessie and Bessie Brigman and was raised in the Brightsville community of Marlboro County, SC along with her five siblings. She graduated from Fletcher Memorial High School and was the valedictorian of her class.

On September 4, 1945, Dorothy married her loving husband, David McKenzie of 41 years. She worked at Oak River Mill for 33 years before retiring, then she worked part time for American Greetings Card Company for 17 years.

Dorothy’s true accomplishments were in her service to the Lord and her church Smyrna United Methodist Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer of the church, a member of the Women’s club and served in numerous other positions over the seventy-seven years she attended.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her family. Her greatest joy in life was her family and friends who lovingly referred to her as Grandma Dot, Meme, Dot Dot, Mama Dot, and Ms. Dot.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Bessie Brigman; her husband David McKenzie; an infant daughter; siblings, Eva Newton, Beulah O’Tuel, Roy Brigman and John Brigman; her son-in-laws Jerry Conyers and Frank Burris Sr.; and a grandson, William C. Schoen Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol Burris of Bennettsville, SC, Phyllis Sweatt (James) of West Columbia, SC, Brenda Nobles (Dalair) of Laurinburg, NC and Bessie Conyers of West Columbia, SC; sister-in-laws, Lena McKenzie and Katie Brigman; grandchildren, Tammy Burris, Frank Burris, Jr. (Brandy), Eric Burris (Aimee), Tica Burris-Jackson (Keith), Melannie Tyson (Alex), Michelle Nobles (Jamel), Christie Allen and Brittany Schoen (Cody); many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Smyrna United Methodist Church 1018 SC-385 Bennettsville, SC 29512.

A celebration of life service will follow at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary. Interment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery 219 N. Cook St. Bennettsville, SC 29512.
