Mrs. Frances Nicholson Townsend, 94, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at The Columbia Presbyterian Community in Lexington.
Born in the Lester Community of Marlboro County on February 1, 1931, Frances was the daughter of the late John A. and Frances Pearson Nicholson. She was a devoted member of Bennettsville First Presbyterian Church. Frances earned her bachelor’s degree from Coker College and spent her career as a dedicated educator, teaching in both the Marlboro County School District and in Winston-Salem.
Beyond her professional life, Frances was active in her community. She enjoyed participating in her bridge club, garden club, book club, and choir. She especially loved spending time with her animals and taking trips to the beach.
Frances leaves behind her son, Jim Townsend (Laura); daughters, Mary Townsend and Ann Townsend Bowman (Mark); and her granddaughter, Anna Michelle Townsend Burner (Nathaniel).
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Milton Townsend, and her brother John “Sonny” A. Nicholson, Jr.
A private graveside service will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025.
The family will receive friends from 12:00–12:30 p.m. the same day at Bennettsville First Presbyterian Church, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 12:30 p.m.
Friends are also invited to a public viewing from 9:00–10:00 a.m., Friday, December 12, 2025, at Burroughs Funeral Home.
