Bennettsville,

Mrs. Hazel Virginia Hayes Skipper passed away February 24, 2024, at Morrell Nursing Center in Hartsville, SC. She was 88 years old.

Mrs. Hazel was born on February 28, 1935, in Dillon County, SC, to the late William Tillman Hayes and Cynthia Melissa Graves Hayes. She was a member of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church. She loved reading, watching old movies, playing Wheel of Fortune, and collecting dolls. She loved God and her family.

She was the wife to the late James Howard Skipper. They were married almost sixty-five years. She decided to go to college after her children graduated from high school. Her husband encouraged her to achieve her dream of being a teacher. He loved being her cab driver.

She was involved in the educational system for many years. She was a secretary at Dillon High School, a lunch clerk at the Murchinson School, and an assistant teacher at Blenheim High School and Bennettsville High School. She attended Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College and graduated from Francis Marion College with honors.  She was a teacher for several years. Her love of teaching was carried on from playing school as a little girl. During her life, she also worked in a dress shop, as a bank teller, and as a typist for WBSC.

She is survived by son, Steven Skipper; and daughters, Susan Williams (Dairl) and Sandy Odom (Alexander); daughter-in-law, Melissa Skipper; grandchildren, Mandi Wood (Josh), Michael Skipper, Kayla McClary (John Mark), Zachary Odom (Hope), Spencer Odom (Jacklyn), Kristin Edwards (Robert), Drew Williams (Hannah); and great-grandchildren, Hayden, Kailey, Easton, Zeke James, Madelyn, Oakley, and Izaac.
