Helen Elizabeth Smith Wright, age 78 of Tatum, passed away on April 18, 2026, at her residence.
Helen was born April 25, 1947, in Marlboro County. She was a daughter of the late Hinnon J. and Myrtle L. Watson Smith. Helen was a retired textile worker. She attended Clio Church of God. Helen loved being outdoors. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and working in the yard. She also enjoyed cooking. Most of all, Helen loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by a husband, Wesley Dean Wright; brothers, Leo Smith and Odell “Buck” Watson; sisters, Irene Nolan, Christine Allen, and Kathleen Sanders.
Helen is survived by her husband, Maxcy Atkinson of the home; sons, Jerry Godwin (Suzanne) and Joey Godwin, both of Bennettsville; daughters, Joann Pruitt (Chino) and April Godwin (Scottie Berry) both of Bennettsville; a brother, Ronnie Smith of Hartsville; a step-son, Ronny Atkinson of Louisiana; step-daughter, Toni Tew (Darryl) of Laurinburg; grandchildren, Lee Godwin, Terry Godwin, Johnathon Grooms, Heather Grooms, Melanie Leaird and Robert Leaird; great grandchildren, Allie Webster, Macie Webster, Preston Godwin, Jocelyn Godwin, Justin Godwin, Grady Leaird, and Johnny Brogle; several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members also survive.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow the service in Rogers Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
