Bennettsville, SC
James Saye “Jim” Wood Jr. passed away at Scotia Village Skilled Nursing Facility on Tuesday, December 27, 2022. He was 84 years old.
Born in Dillon County on October 5, 1938, Jim was the son of the late James Saye, Sr. and Doris Coleman Wood. He was employed in the broadcasting industry for greater than 20 years as a radio announcer. Locally, he was affiliated with WBSC and was known throughout the Pee Dee as the voice of the Green Gremlins. Following his broadcasting career, he worked in sales with Liberty Life Insurance Company and later with Whitner-Evans Funeral Home. Jim loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, teaching youth, young married couples, and the adult men’s Sunday School class alternately for a span greater than 30 years. He enjoyed all genres of music but had a special fondness for big band, jazz, and swing music. Frank Sinatra was a favorite. He also loved sports, especially Clemson Tiger football. Jim was a family man and loved every moment he and Nancy Jo spent with their girls and their families, including the 20 years of family vacations to the beach where he could be found sitting on the porch, taking in the view, and enjoying the salt air. He was a wise man and a “teacher of life lessons,” using every opportunity to teach his girls and grandchildren to best prepare them for life. He believed in being organized and taking care of himself, his surroundings, and possessions, and was known for his sharp appearance and tidy home. Jim was a Godly man and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, listed above.
Jim leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Nancy Jo Evans Wood, of the home; daughters, Angela Wood Riddle (Thomas) of Greenville, SC, Michelle Wood Shelley of Bennettsville, SC, Kelly Wood Branch (Jackie) of Bennettsville, SC; sister, Harriett Wood Rogers (Darryl) of West Jefferson, NC; grandchildren, Jessica Shelley, Erin Shelley, Dawson Shelley (Kayli), Benjamin Riddle, Nicholas Riddle, Jonathan Riddle, Joshua Saye Branch (Brittany), Kacey Branch, and Jackson Branch; great grandchild, Jameson Saye Branch.
