Bennettsville, SC
Jenkins David “JD” Hinson, Jr. (age 82)- beloved father, loyal son, and friend to all who knew him, left this world to be with Jesus on July 25th, 2023. He was on his family farm, his lifelong home place, with his daughter holding him in the early morning hours. Family and friends are welcome to come as you are for a graveside service at 11:00 am on Saturday July 29, 2023, at Beauty Spot Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Taylor Coates.
JD was born on April 8, 1941, in Bennettsville, SC; the only son of late Jenkins “Jenks” Hinson and Mary Annis Hinson. Growing up on the family farm, he developed a natural passion for farming and agriculture. The TV was on the RFD channel every day for the commodities reports. After retiring from Gold Kist, Inc, JD resumed farming and growing produce full-time until his last year of life. JD was known to many as “the collard man” and for his beautiful produce, especially tomatoes, okra and of course, collards. He took great pride in providing quality products, handled with care and available fresh from the field for his loyal customers, grocery stores and restaurants.
JD was a Clemson fan and never passed up the opportunity to say, “How ‘bout them tigers?” after a football win. He was adamant about the importance of hard work and education. He graciously sacrificed to pay for private school tuition because he wanted to give his daughter the best opportunity in life and did everything in his power to see that she got a degree from dear ole Clemson.
JD loved to watch the shaggers at OD and took lessons so he could join in on the fun, but the Blue Ridge Mountains were his favorite place to visit, and the best trips included a scenic train ride. JD loved trains, tractors and trucks. He took advanced electrical courses later in life and could fix almost anything. He loved to ride and enjoyed many country buffets with his dear friends.
He was a lifetime member of the Methodist congregation, attending several local churches in the area over his life. JD loved to listen to the teachings and read books by Billy Graham and Charles Stanley. He was a gentle, old soul that loved God, his family, friends and the farm.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his daughter, Ann Kelly (Steve Gulledge) of Florence, SC; grandchildren: Robert Kelly (Jaime Mourey) of Beaufort, SC and Rachel Kelly (Fox Gregory) of Florence, SC; great-grandson, “Baby Boy Kelly”, expected in December; special cousins and many dear friends who became family of the heart.
