Obituary

Bennettsville, SC

Jennings Legrand “JJ” Jackson passed away Monday, August 21, 2023, surrounded by his family in prayer at McLeod Regional Medical Center of the Pee Dee. He was 73 years old.

Born in Bennettsville, Jennings was a son of the late Walter Robert and Mabel Lee Jackson. He grew up in Marlboro County and established himself here as a self-employed businessman. Alongside his former wife, Nancy Graham Jackson, Jennings owned and operated Jackson’s Texaco and Jackson’s Grocery for many years. More recently he was the retired owner and operator of JJ’s Auto Sales. Even in retirement, he kept busy and always had some type of project going on. Jennings was adventurous and enjoyed life. He always had an interest in cars and loved drag racing and his 66 Chevelle he called “Big Red.” He enjoyed attending the “Rod Run” car show in the fall in the mountains and the “Run to the Sun” car show in the spring at the beach. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and attending bike rallies, especially the Harley Davidson spring rally at Myrtle Beach. Jennings spent a lot of great times at the coast. Whether hanging out and cooking at his beach house in Cherry Grove or listening to music at O.D., particularly anything by Otis Redding, you could always find him laughing and telling stories with his friends and family. Some of his favorite times at home were his annual deer stew and fish fry. He enjoyed keeping up with friends and hometown happenings and never missed his breakfast at Bojangles. Jennings was somewhat of a private man but helped many people in our community with no expectation of anything in return.  He was always close to his brothers, sisters, and cousins and dearly loved his sons and grandkids, affectionately giving nicknames to all of them. For his family, he was their “Go To” person, making sure they were always taken care of and didn’t lack for anything. He will be deeply missed.

Jennings was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wayne & Billy Jackson; granddaughter, Daisey Jackson; nephews, Randy & Terry Nolan; and brothers-in-law, W.L. Nolan and Steve Frazier.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his former wife, Nancy Graham Jackson listed above; sons, Keith Jackson, Charles Wayne Jackson, and Jason Legrand Jackson, all of Bennettsville; sisters, Janelle Nolan and Wanda Frazier, both of Bennettsville; grandchildren, Graham Jackson, C.J. Jackson, Charles Wayne Jackson Jr., Lexi Rae Jackson, Amber Jackson Herndon, Jordan Jackson, William Christian Durham, and Mckenzie Grace Burris Sweatt great-grandchildren, Thomas-Wayne Graham Jackson, Remington June Jackson, Paul Jennings Perkins, Teinlyn Bexley Perkins, and Scarlett Daisey Jackson; and many other beloved family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 25, 2023, at Burroughs Funeral Home, followed by burial in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the funeral home.
