Johnsie Deal Choate Stidd, age 88, died on April 9, 2026 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC. She was born in Winston Salem, NC to the late McLin Sheddan Choate and Margaret Deal Choate.
She graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, VA and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida in Gainsville, Fl. With a degree in Art Education, she taught in Birmingham, AL, Marlboro County, SC and Dillon County, SC. Her students called her “Ms. Art”.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bennettsville, SC. Her love of teaching and her desire to share her faith in Jesus Christ, led in Jesus Christ, led her to teach many Sunday School Classes, Bible Studies, and Bible School, to both children and adults. She participated in Women of the Church and the Community Kitchen. She also organized the Christmas Shoe Boxes for Samaritan’s Purse.
In her younger days she enjoyed folk dancing and square dancing. Johnsie was a talented watercolor artist and won First Prize for watercolor painting one year at the Jubilee Art Festival. She loved to read and was a member of the Cracked Pots Christian Book Club and the Twentieth Century Book Club. She helped organize a supper club with a group of friends and she also started a Red Hat Club. She was active in the Marlboro County Historical Society and a long-standing member and former regent of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Johnsie was very proud of her family history and kept many letters and documents that had been passed down. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially summer vacations at Sunset Beach, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents listed above; her husband, Raymon D. Stidd; sister, Margaret Ann Choate Irby (Jethro); brother, McLin S. Choate, Jr. (Ada Branch); daughter, Amy Stidd Bracey; and granddaughter, Margaret Nicole Bracey.
Surviving family a daughter, Laura Stidd Rowe (Gilbert, Jr.); Son-In-Law Joseph D. Bracey, Sr.; grandchildren, Joseph D. Bracey, Jr. (Xinyi), Raymon B. Bracey (Oleysa) and Kayla Bracey Richardson (Isaac); great grandchildren, Ashley Robertson and Madison Bracey.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 18, 2026 at Bennettsville First Presbyterian Church with a visitation to follow the service in Brogdon Hall.
