Mr. Julius Talmadge “Pepper” Martin Jr, 86, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2025, at Morrison Manor of Scotland Regional Hospice in Laurinburg, NC, surrounded by loving family.
Born in Florence, South Carolina on June 24, 1938, he was the son of Julius Talmadge Martin and Virginia “Helen” Moore Martin. Pepper retired from Day Hospitality Group, (of Atlanta, Georgia) where he was awarded Maintenance Man of the Year from TownePlace Suites of Kennesaw. With his strong faith and spiritual devotion, Pepper spent many of his years serving as an active member of Bennettsville Church of God and Bristow Freewill Baptist Church. Pepper was known in his community as being a talented high school and junior college athlete and played on multiple sports teams at Bennettsville High School. Most importantly, in the words of his family, “he was somewhat of a sports legend and could share highlights and great moments of his sports career, just like they were yesterday”.
Pepper is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Martin and son, Julius Talmadge “Trey” Martin III. He is survived by his children Mary Martin of Bennettsville, Ginger Hamer (Jason Boggs) of Bennettsville, and Steven B. Martin (Barry Nance) of Raleigh; grandchildren Allison Plaisted (Dane) of Longs, Travis (Krista) Martin of Florence, Christopher (Ashley) Hamer of Blenheim, Rhyan (Jacob) Cantwell of Clio, and Nichoas (Rebecca) Hamer of Fayetteville; great-grandchildren – Selah, Jett, & Brooks Martin; Raleigh & Kade Cantwell; Peyton & Eli Hamer; and many other relatives and his church family.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Bristow Freewill Baptist Church. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Bristow Freewill Baptist Church with his burial to follow, directed by Burroughs Funeral Home of Bennettsville, SC.
