Mrs. Leona Scott Johnson, 99, widow of Laurin Johnson, Sr., passed away peacefully at her residence on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, following an illness.
Leona was born on April 5, 1926, in Mt. Airy, NC, to the late Israel and Wilda Ring Scott. She was a devoted member of Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, where her love for life, people, children, reading, and Pop-Tarts was well known and warmly remembered.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Johnson; her adopted daughter, Mary Baker; and a circle of dear friends who were like daughters to her: Nettie Locklear, Cindy Williams, Betty Rose Fowler, Pam Mathis, Katherine Williams, and Michelle Locklear. Also surviving is her brother, (Retired Air Force Major) John Leak Scott (Carol); 12 grandchildren, Judy Clapper, Tammy Gonzalez, John Clapper, Jimmy Johnson, Jackie Johnson, Keith Johnson, Tim Johnson, Glenn Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Tammy Johnson, Becky Johnson, and Angel “Babydoll” Locklear; as well as a host of and great-grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Laurin Johnson, Sr., Leona was preceded in death by her children: Laurin Johnson, Jr., Jimmy Johnson Sr., Charles Toney, Jackie Wayne Johnson Sr., and JoAnn Clapper.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at Eastside Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Roger Williams. Burial will follow at Beaverdam Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the church.
