Obituary

Margaret Ready Corry

July 18, 1927-August 19, 2023

Margaret R. Corry, 96, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023. She was born in Columbia, SC and died in Columbia: but had an interim of seventy years in Bennettsville, SC a community she loved and of which she was an integral part. Margaret was the middle daughter of William Judson Ready and Margaret Closs White Ready. She attended AC Moore, Hand and old Columbia High, where she served as associate editor of the school newspaper her senior year. She then attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina where she joined Kappa Delta sorority.

In 1948, she married John Stanhope Corry Jr. and began her life in Bennettsville. Joining her husband’s large family, she embraced her new existence with joy. For the next seventy years, she lead a life of memberships and service in various book clubs, garden clubs and bridge clubs. She was on the board of the Marlboro Players, as well as the Jennings-Brown House commission. She worked as a literacy teacher with adult education and was a Girl Scout leader. She was a member of Marlboro Country Club and the Cotillion. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a circle chair and Sunday school teacher.

Margaret was an avid reader, excellent bridge player, whip-smart at crossword puzzles, an accomplished seamstress and a gracious hostess. She was beautiful, kind and considerate, always generous with her time and talent. She was a devout Christian, a dear friend, a devoted daughter and sister, and a doting mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, husband, and older sister Elise Ready Badger and sister-in-law Mary Blanche Corry Laney. She is survived by her younger sister, Ann Ready Smith of Columbia. Also surviving Margaret are her daughter Judy Corry Stoneburner and Judy’s husband Craig B Stoneburner of Columbia; Margaret’s grandchildren Braden Stoneburner and his wife Kristy; Claire Stoneburner Rabe and her husband Adam; and Bennett C Stoneburner. Also surviving are six great grandchildren, whom she adored: Lawson, Blakely and Madison Stoneburner and McCall, Jennings and Rollins Rabe. She leaves a large extended family of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
