Matthew Adam Sweatt

Matthew Sweatt, age 52, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. His passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, but his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched.

Matthew was a hardworking and determined man who believed in earning an honest living and helping others whenever he could. Throughout his life, he worked as a technician repairing gaming machines, a truck driver, and later built a successful career as a self-employed plumber and carpenter. He took great pride in his work and was respected for his reliability, skill, and willingness to lend a hand. If someone needed help, Matthew was often one of the first people to show up.

The outdoors was where Matthew felt most at peace. He loved gardening and took pride in watching things grow through his care and patience. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and spending time in nature. An accomplished bow hunter, he spent countless hours in the woods and took great pride in the patience, discipline, and respect for nature that hunting with a bow demanded. Whether he was casting a line into the water, spending time in the woods, or enjoying a day on the lake, Matthew felt most at home outdoors.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Matthew was especially proud of his reputation as a foosball champion and carried that competitive spirit throughout his life. He enjoyed friendly competition, good-natured rivalries, and the camaraderie that came with the game. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. He was also the family's grillmaster, always happy to gather loved ones around good food, laughter, and conversation. On race days, you could often find him watching NASCAR and rooting for his favorite drivers, another passion he thoroughly enjoyed. Whether celebrating a Cowboys victory, firing up the grill for family and friends, or settling in to watch a race, Matthew cherished the moments that brought people together.

One of Matthew's greatest passions was his love for animals. He had a special bond with his dogs and cats and showed kindness and compassion to every animal he encountered. His gentle heart and caring nature extended not only to his pets but also to the people around him. Matthew had a way of making others feel welcome, valued, and cared for.

Matthew's life was not without challenges. He struggled with addiction and alcohol throughout different periods of his life. These battles were difficult, both for him and for those who loved him. Yet those struggles were only one part of his story and never defined the man he was. Matthew was much more than the hardships he faced. He was hardworking, loyal, generous, and deeply loved by his family. Those who knew him best will remember not only the challenges he endured, but also his resilience, his kindness, and the love he shared so freely.

Those who knew Matthew will remember his strong work ethic, his generous spirit, his sense of humor, and his unwavering loyalty. He was a devoted father, a treasured family member, and a faithful friend. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to those fortunate enough to know him.

Although our hearts are broken by his loss, we find comfort in the many memories he leaves behind—the stories shared at family gatherings, the lessons he taught through example, the kindness he showed to others, and the love he gave so freely.

Matthew's life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, compassion, and a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures. His legacy will continue through the family and friends who carry his memory in their hearts.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

He is survived by his beloved daughters, Kristin Liebenrood (Robert) and Khloe Carraway (Jennifer and Jason), who lovingly raised and cared for Khloe as their own; his cherished grandchildren, Tesla, Lily, and John Liebenrood.; his sisters, Susan (Tim Long), Nancy Blue, Sandra (Bobby Locklear), and Loretta VanWagenen; his brother, Henry Sweatt; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends, including his best friend Devin Coble and Pam Gore.

Preceded in death by his father, Namon Sweatt; his mother, Lona Sweatt; his brother, Kelly Sweatt; his brother-in-law, John VanWagenen; and his nephew, Eric Blue.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June the 13th at Burroughs Funeral Home located in Bennettsville, SC. The service starts at 3 pm with visitation from 4 pm to 5 pm. Visitation Service will be followed immediately by dinner located at Shiloh Methodist Church for immediate family and close friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a local animal shelter or rescue organization in Matthew's memory. Matthew had a lifelong love for dogs, cats, and animals of all kinds, and supporting their care would be a fitting tribute to the compassion and kindness he showed throughout his life.
