Nelson “Pete” Newman, age 73 of Bennettsville, passed away on January 30, 2025, at his residence.

Pete was born May 28, 1951, in Shamrock, Florida. He was a son of the late Elzie and Verdie Mae Johnson Newman. Pete was a proud veteran of the United States Army Reserves. He was a hardworking man. He retired from Willamette after thirty years as a maintenance specialist. Pete was also a talented musician. He could play several instruments, but his specialty was the guitar. Pete used his talent for playing music and singing to worship at Bruton Fork Baptist Church. He was also a talented gardener as evidenced by his tall tomato plants. Pete never met a stranger and was a friend to all. Most of all, Pete enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his brothers; Monroe Newman, Ronnie Newman, Marvin Newman, and W.O. Newman.

Pete is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Deborah Bechtold Newman of the home; sons, Christopher Newman of Rockingham, NC, and Jason Newman of Bennettsville; a daughter, Heather Gilson of Slippery Rock, PA; grandchildren, Rain Newman, Mariah Newman, and Victoria Newman; sisters, Bobbie Jean Gibbs of Scottsville, KY, Wanda Jones of Trenton, FL, Faye Ciesynski of Salem, FL, and Sherry Renfroe of Centre, AL; several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members also survive.

A service to celebrate Pete’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Bruton Fork Baptist Church. A private interment will take place at a later date.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Bruton Fork Baptist Church one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
