Roy Franklin Erwin, age 83 of Bennettsville, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at his residence after an extended illness.
Roy was born in Marlboro County on February 27, 1942, to the late Theodore Franklin and Hattie Mae Carver Erwin. He graduated from Lower Marlboro High School in 1960. After graduating, Roy married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Peacock. He was a lifetime member of Marlboro Masonic Lodge #88. Roy served on the board of Camp Pinehill. He was also a reserve deputy with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Department. Roy worked for Suburban Propane, Hanes Hosiery, Liberty Life Insurance Company, Bennettsville Printing, and SoPakCo until his retirement. Roy was a faithful and dedicated member of Salem Baptist Church for over sixty years. He served in many areas of the church. Roy was a church trustee, deacon, Sunday school director, and taught the Adult II Sunday School Class for many years until his health declined. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Roy also liked watching westerns and Clemson and South Carolina football. More than anything, Roy enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the family vacations at the beach.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Erwin Webster; sisters, Margaret Gainey, Betty Mumford, and Marie Price; a brother, Billy Erwin; a nephew, Hubie Erwin; and a great niece, Gracie Scott.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of sixty- three years, Carolyn Peacock Erwin of the home, a daughter, Rebecca Erwin Black (Mark) of Pageland; two special grandchildren, Gregory Franklin Black (Brianne) of Irmo and Meghan Black Estes (Tyler) of Jefferson; son-in-law, Ryan Webster of Selma, NC; sisters, Sarah Erwin of Bennettsville, Mary Norris (Billy Ray) of Laurel Hill, NC, Faye Melton of Darlington, and Linda Smith of Holden Beach, NC; brothers, Hubert Erwin (Ethel) of Walterboro and Herbert Erwin (Mary Ann) of St Louis, MO; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members also survive.
A service to celebrate Roy’s life will be held on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 3:00 P.M. at Salem Baptist Church. Burial will follow the service in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday, September 14, 2025, beginning at 2:00 P.M. at Salem Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
The family would like to acknowledge the staff of Agape Hospice for the compassionate care they gave to Roy.
