Virginia Outen Miller was born first of four children to parents Jesse Ellison Outen and
Theo Horton Outen on July 22, 1921. She grew up in Cheraw and began working at South Carolina National Bank starting in 1943. She worked there for 3 years and during that time met Boyd Miller, Jr. from Bennettsville. He loved Virginia almost at first sight. She was determined to keep working when other women were staying home after marriage. Boyd would not take no for an answer and persuaded her to marry him in 1946. She changed jobs when she moved to Bennettsville and began working at
Marlboro Trust which later merged with First National Bank headquartered in Columbia. First National became South Carolina National Bank. South Carolina National became Wachovia. Virginia retired after 42 years in banking in 1985.
Virginia loved her First Methodist Church and was a wonderful children's Sunday School teacher for many years. Although she had no children of her own, she was good with them and touched the lives of many children through those years of teaching. She had a lot of funny stories to tell about her Sunday School classes. She was a devoted church worker and served in many capacities over the years. Her strong faith and care for others made her always available to help.
Virginia was a loving wife to Boyd and friend to many. People in the community knew they could expect her to sort out with a smile any banking need they might take to her. At 102 Virginia was still able to think circles around others and was in full control of her life. She died peacefully sitting in her recliner preparing for another day with her Bible and devotion next to her.
Virginia was predeceased by her sister Ann Marie Thompson. Her brother Ellison is 100 and lives at the Veteran's Village in Florence, SC. Her sister Mary Lee Morrison is at Scotia Village in Laurinburg and is 97 years old, Virginia is also survived by nieces
Katherine Marie Thompson Summerlin, Mary Ann Morrison McLean, Nancy Lynn Morrison Nance and Virginia Outen Caughman and a nephew Jimmy Outen. Grand nieces and nephews include Virginia Lauren Outen, Mirium Outen MacCheyne, Catherine Rose MacCheyne, Julia Grace MacCheyne, Cynthia Caughman Vannoy and Will Caughman. She is also survived by a close family friend, Todd Garris.
