Bennettsville, SC
Virginia McCall Rivers, age 81 of Bennettsville, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at MUSC in Florence.
Virginia was born on December 28, 1944, in Marlboro County. She was a daughter of the late Henry Irvin and Olie Blanche Hatcher McCall. Virginia spent her career in the food service business. She began her career at Farron’s Restaurant at the age of 14. She then went on to work in and manage the cafeteria at Bennettsville High School. After Virginia left the school, she worked with her husband, Bruce, at Camp Pee Dee. Virginia later opened the Cake Box on Cheraw Street. In January of 1986, the Cake Box moved to the old W. M. Smith Plantation, better known as Southern Oaks. On December 1, 1986, a restaurant featuring country style meals was opened on the site. The restaurant was so successful that the bakery was closed in 1989. However, Virginia continued to do all the baking for the restaurant, including her famous desserts until her retirement.
When Virginia wasn’t baking, she enjoyed gardening, flowers, fishing, and traveling with friends. Most of all, Virginia cherished her time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Rivers; brothers, James McCall, Henry Irvin “Junior” McCall, Jr., Milton McCall, Hardee B. “Boyd” McCall, Nelson McCall, Earl McCall, and James Walden “JW” McCall; sisters, Ola Mae Sports and Juanita McCall Coxe; and her beloved fur baby, Meme.
Virginia is survived by her daughters, Sharon Miles (Dennis) of Florence and Helen Tindal (Kenny) of Conway; granddaughters, Maegan Miles and Taylor Jones (Zane); an uncle, Paul McCall; several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members also survive.
A memorial service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
